Demography and the Coronavirus Pandemic

Abstract. One of the most urgent policy issues related to the COVID-19 pandemic in Europe concerns the extent and ways in which demographics have determined different patterns of mortality between groups and regions, and whether and how the pandemic and its economic consequences will affect population dynamics in the future. Post-pandemic policy evaluations on the spread of COVID-19 and the im...

AGNs and galaxy interactions

We perform a statistical analysis of AGN host characteristics and nuclear activity for AGNs in pairs and without companions. Our study concerns a sample of AGNs derived from the SDSS-DR4 data by Kauffmann et al (2003) and pair galaxies obtained from the same data set by Alonso et al. (2006). An eye-ball classification of images of 1607 close pairs (rp < 25 kpc h , ∆V < 350 km s) according to th...

Cervical Septal Remnants

A 30-year-old woman with a history of two pregnancy losses in the 8th and 16th weeks of pregnancy and a history of metroplasty referred to our Infertility Clinic. Hysterosalpingography (HSG) was performed as a standard infertility evaluation following surgery (Fig 1).

Low-Luminosity AGNs and Unification

More than one third of all nearby galaxies show indications of low-luminosity nuclear activity. These low-luminosity AGNs (LLAGNs) are traditionally classified into a variety of categories depending on their forbidden-line ratios and on the presence or absence of broadline emission. By analogy with Seyfert unification models, it is natural to ask whether the various LLAGN types are different ma...

Spectroscopic Diagnostics for AGNs

A review of the spectroscopic tools needed to characterize AGNs is presented. This review focusses on ultraviolet, optical and infrared emission-line diagnostics specifically designed to help differentiate AGNs from starburst-dominated galaxies. The strengths and weaknesses of these methods are discussed in the context of on-going and future AGN surveys.
